Pear Trees

Asian pears are attracting considerable attention because of their high-quality fruit. They are characterized by apple-like shapes on certain varieties and an apple-like texture with a pear flavor. These varieties are reasonably well-adapted in Texas.
Do not attempt to grow popular varieties such as Bartlett because of their extreme vulnerability to fire blight. Plant only blight resistant varieties in Texas. Plant at least two pear varieties to ensure good fruit set.
Moonglow
Disease resistant Bartlett type pear. Moonglow's fruit has a soft red blush that is great for eating and canning. Peak flavor is obtained when it's fruit is yellow-green, then store in a cool place for about 1 week. Moonglow is a good pollinator for other pear varieties. Ripens early August-September.
Ayers
A very sweet pear with a medium red blush. Cross plollinate with Moonglow or most other pear varieties.
Orient
The Orient Pear Tree is one of the largest, most productive and vigorous fruit producing pear trees adapted especially for the U.S. The pear from the Orient Pear Tree is often completely round like a grapefruit and when ripened, is greenish-yellow and the white pulp is excellent for cooking and preserving. Pear fruit from the Orient Pear Tree increases in size and shape rapidly in the month of July.
Warren
Warren Pear tree is considered the best overall pear fruit producing tree for the state of Texas. The Warren Pear Tree is a Mississippi pear tree that produces a bell-shaped pear fruit. The fruit a has beautiful, red coloring on the outer skin and is delicious to taste.
